I do not have a typical internship due to the Covid Pandemic and for other personal challenges I experienced this year. However these personal challenges of being diagnosed with major clinical depression and other issues led me to learn a lot about physical & mental health and helped me learn some key life skills that I will take forward with me in life. This is why I will be using my 220 hours experience at Muir Woods as my internship. My primary contact at Muir Woods was Mike Runyeon.
My Log of Key Learnings (hours are estimates)
Personal Health: (Mental, Emotional & Physical) I learned concepts related to health promotion and learned how to use interpersonal communication & decision making Skills to enhance health or reduce health risks. I also learned about depression (55 Hours).
Social Health & Relationships: I analyzed the influence of family, peers, culture, media, technology and other factors on health behaviors (35 Hours)
Substance & Abuse: Studied the nature of addiction and how specifically mental health issues can lead to abuse (55 Hours)
Practicing Healthy Habits: Learned goal setting and how to advocate for myself, family and community on health. I know how to seek help and recognize triggers. I learned techniques to help with my anxiety and what to do if I am feeling or someone else is feeling depressed. (75 Hours)
In conclusion: I received a certificate of completion for the above course work at Muir woods. By the end of my time at Muir Woods I was viewed as a leader that other teens would come to for support as they started their journey of better health. I really did learn a lot about the mind and body, but most importantly I learned I am not alone in having depression and I know how to seek help and support in the future.
